Se han hecho públicos los finalistas de los premios Hugo y John W. Campbell 2008, los más prestigiosos galardones de la literatura fantástica y de la ciencia-ficción, junto a los Nebula y los Locus

Los Premios Hugo o Science Fiction Achievement Awards, son una serie de importantes galardones otorgados a escritores de ciencia-ficción (o en menor grado fantasía), así como a artistas gráficos, guionistas, editores,… El premio recibe su nombre en honor a Hugo Gernsback, fundador de la pionera revista de ciencia ficción Amazing Stories y de la invención del término ciencia-ficción.

Los premios se conceden anualmente desde 1953 en la Convención mundial de ciencia-ficción (Worldcon). En cada edición se crea la Sociedad mundial de ciencia-ficción (WSFS), cuyos miembros participan en la selección previa, una selección de cinco candidatos y un ganador final en cada categoría.
 
Durante la celebración del evento se reparten otros premios, como el Premio John W. Campbell al mejor autor novel del año.
El diseño del premio fue obra de Benedict Jablonski, que basó el mismo en una pequeña nave espacial de acero inoxidable que adornaba el capó del Oldsmobile 88.
Los premios Hugo de este año se entregarán en la 66th World Science Fiction Convention que se celebrará en Denver, Colorado entre el 6 y el 10 de agosto. En la edición del año pasado el ganador del premio Hugo a la mejor novela recayó en Rainbows End, de Vernor Vinge.
